“One valuable feature of Iris is that it has the option for a cellular data connection to act as… a primary connection in areas where always-on internet is not available.”
Well yes, but not anymore. A notification has been sent to cellular modem uses that Iris/Lowes is terminating cellular service June 30th (2016). Now, there is talk of a new carrier with 4G service and a free cellular modem – but when? Users depending solely on a cellular connection will be without service for “several months.” How could Lowes terminate service with Verizon before having a plan for seamless transition?
Lowes suggests the installation of a cellular hotspot during the blackout period. Let’s run the numbers with Verizon service…
PURCHASE CELLULAR MODEM 150. (to avoid 2-year contract)
ACTIVATION FEE 20.
MONTHLY ACCESS FEE 20.
4GB DATA FEE 30. (month/minimum offered)So 220.00 for the first month to cover Iris’ dropped service.
The way the cellular transition is being handled is probably the best reason not to recommend the Iris service – and perhaps signals the time to switch to another security system.
